1. Is the Controller Missing From Windows or Only MEmu?
Start by defining the symptom precisely. A controller that is absent from Windows requires a different fix from one that works in Windows but not in MEmu. Testing this boundary prevents unnecessary changes to Android images, render settings, virtualization, or Google Play Services.
1.1 Test the controller in Windows
- Close MEmu Play and any running Multi-MEmu instances.
- Press Windows key + R, enter joy.cpl, and select OK.
- Look for the controller in the Game Controllers window.
- Select it, open Properties, and test its buttons, sticks, triggers, and directional pad.
If the controller does not appear in this panel, MEmu cannot reliably use it. Continue with the USB, Bluetooth, driver, and input-mode checks below. If it appears and responds correctly, skip to the MEmu-specific sections.
Also test the device in a native Windows game or a trusted controller-testing application. A single game may have its own controller restrictions, so use more than one test when possible. If the joystick fails everywhere, the problem is outside MEmu.
1.2 Identify XInput and DirectInput behavior
Windows controllers commonly expose input through XInput, DirectInput, or both. Xbox-style controllers usually offer XInput, while older gamepads, flight sticks, generic USB controllers, and some adapters use DirectInput. MEmu or the Android game may interpret these interfaces differently.
If your controller has a physical or software-controlled mode switch labeled X, D, XInput, DirectInput, Android, or PC, note its current position. Close MEmu before changing the mode, reconnect the controller, verify it again with joy.cpl, and then relaunch MEmu. Do not repeatedly switch modes while an emulator instance is running because Windows may register the alternate mode as a different device.
Some controller utilities emulate an Xbox controller while leaving the original DirectInput device active. This can create duplicate inputs or cause software to select the wrong interface. Temporarily close remappers and virtual-controller tools during testing, but do not delete their profiles.
2. Reconnect USB and Bluetooth Controllers Safely
A clean reconnection often fixes detection without changing MEmu. Shut down the affected Android instance first so that both Windows and MEmu enumerate the controller from a known state.
2.1 Repair a USB connection
- Exit MEmu Play completely and confirm that its instance window has closed.
- Disconnect the controller.
- Wait several seconds, then connect it directly to a different USB port.
- Avoid an unpowered hub, docking station, extension cable, or monitor USB port during diagnosis.

Open Device Manager only if Windows still does not recognize the device. Look for warning icons under Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, or USB controllers. Start with Update driver or the controller manufacturer's official driver package. Do not install drivers from unofficial download sites.
2.2 Repair a Bluetooth connection
- Close MEmu and turn the controller off.

A controller can display as paired while its active input connection is unavailable. Re-pairing refreshes the device relationship. Keep the controller charged and place it near the Bluetooth adapter while testing. If USB works but Bluetooth does not, concentrate on Bluetooth drivers, radio interference, and the controller's wireless mode rather than changing the MEmu VM.
3. Eliminate Steam Input and Remapping Conflicts
Steam Input can translate, hide, duplicate, or remap a physical controller. That behavior is useful for games launched through Steam, but it may interfere when MEmu is opened independently or added as a non-Steam application.
3.1 Test with Steam fully closed
- Save any controller layouts you created in Steam.
- Exit MEmu.
- Exit Steam from its menu rather than merely closing its window.
- Check Task Manager and allow Steam controller processes to finish normally.
- Reconnect the controller and verify it with joy.cpl.

A game recognizing a native Android controller is not the same as a MEmu keymap generating on-screen taps, so determine which method your game uses.

- Start only the instance where the problem occurs.
- Open the affected game and wait until its controls are visible.
- Open MEmu's keymapping or keyboard-mapping editor from the emulator toolbar.
- Check whether the expected game-specific layout is loaded.
- Select an existing control and press a controller button to see whether the editor registers it.
If the editor sees button presses but the game does not react, the device is detected and the fault is probably in the layout, touch placement, game scene, or game-specific control mode. If the editor cannot see any controller input despite Windows detecting it, continue with MEmu settings, conflicts, and fresh-VM testing.
Do not reset or overwrite the whole layout immediately. First capture screenshots of every mapping screen. If your MEmu build offers an export, backup, or profile-management function, save the profile outside the VM. Keep a written record of sensitivity, dead-zone, aiming, and movement settings that matter to you.
4.2 Rebuild one control as a diagnostic
Create or edit one harmless test mapping rather than replacing the full profile. Assign a single controller button to an obvious on-screen action, save the layout, and test it. If that mapping works, repair the existing layout control by control.
Confirm that touch targets still align with the game's current interface. Game updates, resolution changes, DPI changes, window aspect ratios, and altered in-game HUD layouts can make a valid profile appear broken. Smart keys may also depend on a supported game screen or state. A smart aiming control that works during a match may do nothing in a lobby or menu.
4.3 Separate keymapping from native gamepad support
Some Android games accept controller input directly. Others require MEmu to convert buttons and stick movement into touches. Test both possibilities carefully:
- Check the game's own controls menu for controller settings.
- Test whether menus respond before applying a MEmu keymap.
- If native input works, avoid mapping the same button again and producing duplicate actions.
- If native input does not work, use MEmu's keymapping editor to place touch controls over the game's on-screen buttons.
Do not assume that Google Play Services controls joystick detection. Clearing Google Play data, removing a Google account, or reinstalling the game is unlikely to repair a Windows-level controller problem and can remove sign-in state or local data. Use those actions only when evidence points to a game or account service problem, and back up important data first.
5. Protect Macros, Recorder Scripts, and Synchronized Instances
Controller troubleshooting should not destroy unrelated automation. Macro keys, the operation recorder, and the synchronizer interact with input, but they solve different problems.
5.1 Disable automation during the test
Stop active macro keys and operation recorder playback before testing the joystick. A script can tap the screen, move the pointer, or change the current game state while you are evaluating physical input. Save the script and note its storage location or export option before editing anything.
The operation recorder reproduces recorded emulator actions. It does not prove that Windows or MEmu detects a physical joystick. If a recorded sequence works while the controller does not, the Android app and touch layer are probably functioning, which narrows the fault to physical input detection or mapping.
5.2 Turn off the synchronizer temporarily
Multi-MEmu's synchronizer can mirror actions from a primary instance to other instances. Disable synchronization while diagnosing one VM. Otherwise, another window may receive or repeat actions and make the result difficult to interpret.
After repairing the primary instance, enable the synchronizer and confirm that intended keyboard, mouse, touch, or automation events still propagate correctly. Do not assume that every physical joystick event will be synchronized in the same way as a recorded touch action. Test the exact workflow you plan to use.
6. Compare Another App and a Fresh MEmu VM
Testing another app establishes whether the problem belongs to one Android game or the entire MEmu instance. Use a trusted app or another game that you already know supports controllers. Avoid unknown controller-testing APKs from untrusted sources.
If the joystick works in another Android app, inspect the original game's native controller support, scene-specific smart keys, HUD placement, and control settings. If it fails in every app but works in Windows, test a fresh VM.
6.1 Create a non-destructive test instance
- Open Multi-MEmu.
- Leave the existing VM untouched.
- Create a new test VM using an available standard image.
- Install only the minimum trusted app needed for testing.
- Connect the controller before launching the test instance.
- Test native input and one simple keymapping assignment.
MEmu installations may offer Android 5.1 or 7.1 images and 32-bit or 64-bit images. Choose an image compatible with the target game, but treat this as an isolation test rather than an assumption that one image automatically fixes joystick support. If a fresh VM works, the original VM's configuration or control profile is likely damaged. Copy settings and profiles carefully instead of deleting the old VM.
Deleting a VM permanently removes its local apps, data, settings, and potentially stored automation assets. Do not delete, reset, or compact an image until you have backed up anything important. Image compaction is a storage operation, not a normal joystick repair.
6.2 Use MEMUC or ADB only for targeted diagnostics
Advanced users may use MEMUC to identify and manage instances or ADB to inspect Android-side input devices and logs. These tools can help confirm whether Android receives an event, but they should not be used to issue broad reset, delete, or data-clearing commands without a verified backup.
If you are unfamiliar with a command, do not run it merely because it appears in an online forum. Instance indexes and package names can differ, and a command intended for a test VM can affect the wrong instance.
7. Avoid Unrelated Performance and Virtualization Changes
Render mode, CPU allocation, memory presets, and virtualization can influence emulator stability, but they rarely explain a joystick that works in Windows and is absent only from MEmu's mapping editor. Avoid changing several performance settings at once.
7.1 Test render mode only when the interface is malfunctioning
If the keymapping overlay is invisible, distorted, misplaced, or unclickable, test the alternate supported render mode, such as OpenGL or DirectX. Restart the instance after changing render mode. This can repair a visual or overlay issue, but it does not fix a controller missing from Windows.
Record the original mode before changing it. A different renderer can affect game compatibility or performance, so restore the previous setting if controller detection does not improve.
7.2 Leave VT and Hyper-V alone unless MEmu itself will not run
VT, Hyper-V mode, and MEmuHyperv concern virtualization and emulator operation. They are not first-line joystick fixes. Changing Hyper-V or Windows virtualization features can disrupt WSL2, Docker Desktop, Windows Sandbox, credential protections, and other virtual machines.
Only investigate virtualization when MEmu cannot launch, crashes before Android loads, or explicitly reports a virtualization conflict. Document the current configuration, consult the requirements of every dependent application, and restart Windows when a verified change requires it.
Likewise, do not randomly increase CPU and memory presets. Use stable values that your PC can support. Shared folders are useful for copying exported profiles or scripts, but they do not control joystick enumeration.
8. Repair MEmu Only After Isolation Tests
If the controller works in Windows, Steam and remapping conflicts have been excluded, and every MEmu VM fails to detect it, repair or reinstall MEmu may be justified. Preserve data first.
8.1 Prepare a backup
- Export or document keymapping profiles where the installed build permits it.
- Back up operation recorder scripts and macro configurations.
- Record Multi-MEmu instance names, Android image types, resolutions, and CPU and memory presets.
- Copy essential files through shared folders or another verified backup method.
- Confirm that games using cloud saves have completed synchronization.
- Capture screenshots of joystick, smart-key, and in-game control settings.
Do not assume that uninstalling MEmu preserves VMs. Do not delete instances as a substitute for uninstalling the application. If you proceed with reinstalling, obtain the installer from MEmu's official website and review each prompt concerning user data.
8.2 Keep security protections enabled
Do not disable antivirus, firewall protection, driver-signature enforcement, memory integrity, or other Windows security features as a routine controller fix. If security software explicitly blocks a verified MEmu component, investigate the alert and use a narrow, reversible exception only when you trust the file and source.
Restart Windows after a driver update, MEmu repair, or other change that specifically requires it. Then test with Steam and remappers closed, one controller connected, and one MEmu instance running.
9. Final Controller Recovery Checklist
Use this checklist to confirm that the issue is resolved without masking it through automation or an unrelated configuration change.
- The controller appears in joy.cpl and all expected buttons and axes respond.
- The controller works through the intended USB, receiver, or Bluetooth connection.
- The selected XInput or DirectInput mode remains stable after reconnection.
- MEmu detects the controller with Steam and third-party remappers closed.
- The keymapping editor registers at least one test button or axis.
- The correct control profile loads for the affected game and game scene.
- Smart keys and touch targets align with the current resolution and HUD.
- The game does not receive duplicate native and mapped controller actions.
- Macro keys and operation recorder scripts remain saved and functional.
- The synchronizer is disabled during diagnosis and works as intended after reactivation.
- Another Android app or a fresh VM confirms whether the issue is game-specific or instance-specific.
- No original VM is deleted, reset, or compacted before its data is backed up.
- OpenGL, DirectX, VT, Hyper-V mode, MEmuHyperv, CPU, and memory settings are changed only when evidence requires it.
- The controller still works after restarting MEmu and Windows.
