When WASD movement stops working in MEmu Play, the cause is usually a lost keyboard focus, a misplaced movement control, an overlapping keymap region, or a game interface change. You normally do not need to reinstall MEmu, delete a VM, or rebuild every automation script. Follow the checks below in order, changing one setting at a time and testing movement after each change. The goal is to restore WASD input while preserving working keymaps, joystick settings, macros, operation recorder scripts, and synchronizer configurations.

1. Confirm What Is Actually Failing
Start by separating a WASD mapping failure from a wider keyboard or game problem. Launch the affected game in MEmu Play, enter an area where movement is allowed, and click once inside the game window. Press W, A, S, and D individually. Then test another mapped key, such as jump, inventory, or attack.
- If other mapped keys work but WASD does not, inspect the movement control and overlapping keymap regions.
- If no mapped keys work, check keyboard focus, mapping activation, and Windows keyboard input first.
- If WASD types letters into a chat box, close the chat or text field before testing movement.
- If the game responds to touch dragging but not keys, its movement mapping is probably missing or misplaced.
- If movement works in one VM but not another, compare the two VM profiles and keymaps.
Test in a live match, training area, or game scene that actually displays the virtual joystick. Some games hide or disable movement controls in menus, cutscenes, chat windows, and loading screens. A keymap cannot operate a joystick that is not currently available to the Android game.

Open Notepad outside MEmu and type WASD. If one or more letters fail there, the issue is not specific to MEmu. Check the physical keyboard, wireless connection, keyboard software, gaming mode, and any remapping utility running in Windows.
Also test both lowercase and uppercase input. A stuck Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or Windows key can alter keyboard behavior. Temporarily close legitimate keyboard remappers or gaming peripheral software if they intercept WASD, but do not disable security software merely to test movement.
1.2 Identify The Scope Across Multi-MEmu Instances
If you use Multi-MEmu, test the same game in another existing instance without changing it. A failure limited to one VM points toward that instance's keymap, Android image, game layout, or stored configuration. A failure across every instance is more likely to involve keyboard focus, a global hotkey conflict, Windows input settings, or the current MEmu installation.
Do not clone, delete, or overwrite instances yet. First record which VM images are affected, including whether they use Android 5.1 or 7.1 and whether they are 32-bit or 64-bit images. These details help you compare behavior without assuming that a different Android image is automatically the solution.
2. Restore Keyboard Focus And Keymapping
Click directly inside the active game area, then press WASD again. MEmu can lose keyboard focus after you interact with the side toolbar, keymapping editor, operation recorder, synchronizer, Windows taskbar, or another emulator window. If the game is running in full screen, exit full screen and retest in a normal window so you can see which window is active.
- Bring the correct MEmu Play window to the foreground.
- Close any open chat box, search field, login field, or naming dialog inside the game.
- Click the visible game world rather than the MEmu toolbar.
- Press Escape once if a hidden menu or text input may be active.
- Test W, A, S, and D one at a time.
When several instances are open, verify that you are typing into the instance you intend to control. The synchronizer may send actions to selected instances, but it does not fix an invalid movement map in the source or target VM.
2.1 Reopen The Keymapping Editor
Open MEmu's keymapping or keyboard mapping editor from the emulator toolbar. Confirm that keyboard mapping is enabled and that the current game has a loaded profile. Do not immediately reset the entire profile, especially if it contains custom skill keys, joystick controls, smart keys, macro keys, or carefully positioned actions.
Before editing, take screenshots of the complete mapping layout and any control-specific settings. If your MEmu build provides an export, backup, or profile copy function, use it. Also preserve operation recorder scripts separately where possible. A screenshot will not restore a script, but it can prevent hours of manual reconstruction.
3. Repair The WASD Movement Control
The movement control must match the game's on-screen joystick. In most joystick-based games, four independent tap controls are not equivalent to a directional movement pad. Use MEmu's movement, direction, or virtual joystick control type intended for WASD movement.
- Open the game scene where the virtual joystick is visible.
- Open the keymapping editor.
- Locate the existing movement control.
- Confirm that its assigned directions are W, A, S, and D.
- Drag its center onto the exact center of the game's joystick.
- Resize its active region so it covers the joystick without reaching nearby buttons.

If the game uses tap-to-move, swipe movement, or a floating joystick, a standard fixed joystick map may not behave correctly. Check the game's own control settings and select a fixed joystick layout when the game offers one. A fixed joystick is usually easier to map reliably because its center does not move between touches.
3.1 Remove Overlapping Keymap Regions
Two controls can compete for the same screen area or keyboard key. Inspect the space around the virtual joystick for tap points, swipe controls, camera controls, smart keys, firing controls, or macro triggers. Also look for duplicate W, A, S, or D assignments elsewhere in the profile.
Move suspicious controls away temporarily rather than deleting them. Save the profile and test. If movement returns, reposition or resize the conflicting control so its active region no longer overlaps the joystick. This approach preserves the control and makes the change easy to reverse.
3.2 Replace Only The Movement Control
If the movement object appears correct but does not respond, rebuild only that object. Do not reset the entire keymap first.
- Capture a screenshot of the movement control's position and size.
- Remove only the existing movement control.
- Add a new movement or directional control.
- Center it on the visible joystick.
- Assign W, A, S, and D explicitly.
- Save, exit the editor, refocus the game, and test.
This selective reset protects unrelated mappings, including skill buttons, joystick inputs, macros, and smart key configurations.

Windows keyboard layout affects which physical keys produce specific characters. Use the Windows input indicator to confirm that the expected keyboard language and layout are active. If you switch between layouts, return to the layout used when the MEmu profile was created, then reopen the keymapping editor and reassign WASD.
Do not assume the letters shown on physical keycaps match the active Windows layout. This is especially relevant when switching among QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ, or custom layouts. Rebinding the movement directions while the intended layout is active is safer than repeatedly changing unrelated MEmu settings.
4.1 Reposition Controls After A Game Update
Game updates can move the virtual joystick, change its size, add new interface elements, or reset the in-game control layout. Resolution, aspect ratio, and display-density changes can produce the same effect. The keymap may still load while pointing at the old screen coordinates.
Open the game's control customization screen and compare it with the MEmu overlay. If possible, restore the game's joystick to a fixed default position. Then align the MEmu movement control with the new center and retest. Review other mapped actions because a broad interface update can shift more than the joystick.
5. Isolate Joystick, Smart Key, Macro, And Automation Conflicts
A connected gamepad or joystick may take control of movement or change the game's selected input mode. Disconnect the controller temporarily, restart the game, click inside the emulator, and test WASD. If keyboard movement returns, review the game's input mode and MEmu's joystick mapping before reconnecting the device.
Smart keys and context-sensitive controls may behave differently as the game changes state. Temporarily move or disable only the smart control overlapping the movement area. Avoid wiping the full smart-key profile unless you have preserved its settings.
5.1 Pause Macro Keys And Operation Recorder Playback
A macro key can hold, repeat, or redirect an input. Operation recorder playback can also generate touches while you are trying to move manually. Stop active macros and end operation recorder playback before testing WASD. Confirm that no script uses W, A, S, or D as a trigger.
Preserve scripts before editing or deleting anything. If a recorded workflow no longer aligns with the game after a UI update, duplicate or back up the script and adjust the copy. Do not erase all recordings merely because manual movement stopped working.
5.2 Test Without The Synchronizer
Turn off synchronization temporarily and test the primary instance alone. If movement works, check which Multi-MEmu instances are selected and whether each target uses the same resolution, game UI layout, keymap, and Android configuration. Synchronization reproduces input, but identical coordinates can produce different results when VM displays or game layouts differ.
MEMUC or ADB automation can also inject input independently of the keyboard overlay. Stop only the relevant automation process or test command sequence. Avoid issuing destructive MEMUC or ADB commands, clearing application data, or replacing VM files during this diagnostic stage.
6. Restart The Smallest Necessary Component
After saving a repaired map, close and reopen the game. If that fails, restart the affected MEmu instance. Restarting can clear a stuck input state without altering the VM image or installed apps. Reboot Windows only if focus problems, keyboard hooks, or pending system changes persist.
Render mode is not a common direct cause of missing WASD input. However, if the joystick is not drawn correctly or the game's UI is visually displaced, note the current OpenGL or DirectX setting before testing the alternative. Change one setting, restart MEmu when prompted, and compare. Restore the original mode if there is no improvement.
Likewise, CPU and memory presets usually affect responsiveness rather than mapping definitions. Increase resources only if the VM is severely stalled and Windows has sufficient capacity. Do not combine CPU, memory, render mode, resolution, and keymap changes in one test because you will not know which change mattered.
7. Test A Fresh VM Without Risking The Original
If the issue remains isolated to one instance, create a fresh test VM in Multi-MEmu. Keep the original VM untouched. Choose an Android image compatible with the game, such as an available Android 5.1 or 7.1 image and the required 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Install only the affected game, reproduce its control layout, and test a new WASD movement control.
- If WASD works in the fresh VM, the original instance likely has a profile or app-specific configuration problem.
- If WASD fails in both VMs, investigate Windows input, MEmu-wide settings, or the game's current interface.
- If only one Android architecture works, confirm that the game officially supports that architecture before migrating.
A fresh VM is a diagnostic environment, not permission to delete the old one. Preserve the original instance until apps, accounts, keymaps, recordings, shared-folder files, and automation scripts have been verified elsewhere.
7.1 Avoid Unrelated Data Resets
Clearing Google Play Services data, removing a Google account, or reinstalling the game is unlikely to repair a misplaced WASD overlay. These actions can sign you out, trigger downloads, or remove game settings. Use them only when there is separate evidence of an account, installation, or Play Services problem.
Shared folders can be useful for copying exported files, screenshots, or script backups, but verify that files are accessible from Windows before modifying the VM. Do not assume a shared folder contains every MEmu configuration file.
8. Treat Virtualization And Security Changes As Last Resorts
VT, Hyper-V mode, MEmuHyperv, and Windows virtualization features affect whether MEmu can launch and perform correctly, but they rarely explain a failure limited to WASD. If the emulator launches and every other control works, do not change virtualization settings for this symptom alone.
Changing Hyper-V or Windows security and virtualization features can affect WSL2, Docker Desktop, Windows Sandbox, virtual machines, and other software. Record the current configuration, confirm the requirement for your MEmu installation, and plan for a Windows restart before making any change. Do not disable antivirus or security protections as a routine keymapping fix.
Compacting an image, deleting a VM, uninstalling MEmu, or manually changing VM files carries data-loss risk and should come only after backups and a successful fresh-VM test. If repair or reinstall becomes necessary, preserve VM data, screenshots of control profiles, exported scripts, shared-folder content, and account recovery information first.
9. Final WASD Resolution Checklist
Use this checklist in the affected game scene before considering the problem solved:
- The correct MEmu Play window receives keyboard focus.
- W, A, S, and D work normally in Windows applications.
- No game chat box or Android text field is active.
