ContentBASE Tools: Small Tools, Big Questions

  • Explore interactive experiments and practical browser utilities.
  • Find clear explanations of the inputs, data, and assumptions behind each tool.
  • Start with the ContentBASE Life Simulator, our revival of the Polstats classic.

A good tool takes you from “I wonder…” to “let’s try it.” ContentBASE Tools is our home for interactive experiments and useful utilities you can use in your browser.

Some questions call for a calculation. Others deserve a simulation, a visual explanation, or a little experimentation. We’re building this collection for all of those moments: practical problems, big what-ifs, and the occasional rabbit hole you didn’t know you needed.

Explore the What-Ifs

What changes when you move a slider, remove a risk, or challenge a familiar assumption? Interactive tools let you explore the answer for yourself. You can try different inputs, compare the outcomes, and see which details actually matter.

The collection will grow across calculators, simulators, visual experiments, and focused utilities. Each tool gets its own page with the context and instructions you need to make sense of it. Where a result depends on data or assumptions, that explanation belongs alongside the controls.

Start With the ContentBASE Life Simulator

What would eventually kill us if natural causes of death disappeared? The ContentBASE Life Simulator brings back the much-loved Polstats Life Simulator with updated US mortality data and a familiar cast of remarkably long-lived people.

Run a population through thousands of simulated years, explore different age-based risk profiles, and watch which causes of death emerge. Then try the hypothetical perfect-FSD setting to see what happens when motor vehicle deaths disappear too.

It is a thought experiment about risk, chance, and the assumptions behind an answer. It is also surprisingly difficult to stop watching.

Get More From Each Experiment

Start with the default settings, then change one thing at a time. Read the explanation around the tool, check what its inputs mean, and compare the new result with your starting point. For random simulations, run the same setup more than once: chance is part of the experiment.

If you share a result, include the settings that produced it. A useful number becomes much more interesting when someone else can understand how you got there.

A Growing Collection to Come Back To

ContentBASE Tools will keep expanding with new ways to calculate, compare, visualize, and experiment. This page brings the collection together, so you can find something useful, follow your curiosity, and come back when you have another question to put to the test.
